This study shows very low complication risk and very low mortality risk at high volume center
In this study, the researchers report the surgical outcomes among over 4000 patients, volumes similar to that of Western Bariatric Institute where I practice. And, similar to our own practice, and that of many other high volume centers with experienced surgeons and programs, the overall mortality and complication rates were quite a bit lower than had been reported in smaller studies or in statewide averages. In their study, which took place between 1998 and 2006, an eight-year time span, 5,365 patients underwent weight loss surgery. A mixture of procedures was performed, including Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, and even some vertical banded gastroplasty procedures. The mortality risk was 0.13%.
